Humalog Kwikpen: FRUSTRATED!

At Jaxson's Endo appointment 2 weeks ago we were given samples of the Humalog Kwikpen to start using. I kept one and sent the other off to be used at school. I seem to be having nothing but problems with our pen. With every injection it seems as if I've given him nothing and his bg continues to rise. I thought perhaps the initial pen needles were too small. We switched back to dosing him with syringes and his bg fell in line. So we went to the next gauge pen needle thinking this was the problem, but again, his bg is on the rise. In the meantime, the school nurse is getting great numbers with her pen. My only other solution is to toss out the insulin pen and start a new one. Anyone else ever have issues like this?

  1. Hey Deanna...are you leaving the needle in for a 10 count after the injection is complete? Also, if you are ever only giving 0.5 units...I don't think they are approved for that small of a dose. And...are you priming the needle first before each injection? This is all I can think of. I hope you didn't find my comment insulting if you already knew all of that...the nurse in me came flying out - LOL. I hope things start to turn around.

  2. No insult taken Reyna. lol I have tried all that you mentioned, a few times over actually. Even after changing out the pen he still tested high after breakfast so I'm doing something wrong. I guess it's time to call Endo. We'll probably have to go back to syringes. I'm waiting to hear what kind of numbers he has for the rest of the day at school. I appreciate any insight you have. :)

  3. I was actually going to suggest the counting too. Thats what we had to do when Kacey used the pens and we found that to help. Also making sure we rotated...right arm, right tummy, right leg, left leg, left tummy, left arm...this way the injections had time to absorb without injecting into the same spots. Hope things get better! The pens were very convenient for us since Kacey was doing her own injections. She didn't have to try and draw up her dose with a syringe...just dial it up! :) Good luck!!

  4. We did NOT have good success with the pen...Sugar did shots for 18 months before pumping. Sorry I can't be more helpful...hope you get it figured out quick!

  5. Ive been using injection pens for years. Just started using the Kwikpen and hate it. Problem with dialing the dosage and pushing the button and nothing happens. Not my favorite i am going to investigate the novalog pen instead.

  6. I inject 8 units at meal time and experience mixed results. Often the pen feels like it is slipping during the injection. I experimented with watching the fluid from the needle. Sometimes I get steady stream other times as little as one drop. I am going to ask my doctor for another brand pen.

Had another 1 stuck when on holiday like a divy i tried to fix it with the niddle inside me and accedently injected most of the pens contense into me without knowing and ended up in intensive care. be carful with these cheep nasty pens. often the insulin shoots out after it is removed.
